The Airdrie boys

From 12th to 29th September 2014, at Dunoon Burgh Hall and open from 12 noon to 15.00 Thursday to Saturday, this exhibition of works by The Airdrie Boys,  Dan Ferguson and John Cunningham, has been curated by Anne E Ferguson and Jacqueline Orr with support from the Cunningham family.

It is also part of the 2014 Cowal Open Studios weekend programme of access to artists’ studios throughout the Cowal peninsula, from 26th to 29th September.

Dan Ferguson and John Cunningham were both born in Lanarkshire and formed a lifelong friendship during their school years at Airdrie Academy.

Both studied at Glasgow School of Art and both became lecturers there, working with many emerging young artists and helping to shape their development.

They exhibited in the same major shows – at the RGI, RSA and RSW; and were both active members of The Glasgow Art Club.

Both dealt repeatedly with the spectacular landscape of Cowal, with Cumningham staying in Strachur on Loch Fyne to paint in the vicinity – at Newton and Lch Eck, for example; and Ferguson, with his wife, Meg, often painting at their converted chapel at Glendaruel.

This exhibition presents Cowal to Cowal as these two artists saw and represented it. It will be a glorious exhibition and is tuned to the heart of the artists who are members of Cowal Open Studios and whose studios will be open to allcomers over the late September weekend detailed above.
